Inglourious Basterds (2009) is an alternate history war film directed and written by Quentin Tarantino. Brad Pitt stars as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, an officer leading a Jewish-American commando unit targeting enemy forces in occupied France. Their lethal guerrilla mission intersects with Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), a Jewish theater owner executing an independent covert revenge plot. Her plan targets top-ranking Third Reich leaders, including Adolf Hitler (Martin Wuttke), setting a deadly trap inside her Paris cinema during a high-profile movie premiere.

Tarantino borrowed the title from Enzo G. Castellari's 1978 Italian combat movie The Inglorious Bastards, giving Castellari a cameo appearance. Production was just one week away from total cancellation because Tarantino believed Colonel Hans Landa was unplayable—requiring an actor to speak English, German, French, and Italian—until Christoph Waltz auditioned and could fluently speak all four languages. Tarantino originally wrote the "Bear Jew" specifically for Adam Sandler before scheduling conflicts forced Sandler to exit. The film earned eight Oscar nominations—including Best Picture—with Waltz winning Best Supporting Actor.
