‘Doomsday Glacier’ is melting faster than scientists thought

The Thwaites Glacier, nicknamed the "Doomsday Glacier" due to the potential consequences of its collapse, is rapidly melting because of climate change. This massive glacier holds enough ice to raise sea levels by over two feet if it were to completely melt. Scientists are worried that because of rising temperatures, the Thwaites Glacier is reaching a tipping point where its melting will become unstoppable.

The Thwaites Glacier acts like a giant dam, holding back even more ice from flowing into the ocean. If this glacier were to collapse, it could trigger a domino effect, causing even more glaciers to melt and contribute to rising sea levels.

The consequence of this melted ice would be flooding in coastal cities around the world. Even a small rise in sea level could inundate low-lying areas, displacing millions of people and causing significant damage to property.

Scientists are still unsure exactly when the Thwaites Glacier might collapse, but they agree that it's a serious threat. They are racing to understand the glacier better and develop solutions to slow down its melting.
